Daijyo-ji Temple

With beautiful paintings on the sliding doors,
the entire temple is like a museum.

There are 168 nationally important cultural properties, including 165 wall paintings by Ohkyo Maruyama and his disciples, a statue of the eleven-faced Kannon, etc. The wall paintings of the reception hall compose the world of the 3-dimensional mandala which was created by well calculated arrangements. His idea of painting, called “Place” painting, has been blended together with a region, building, space, and religion.
You can see this style of painting in the images painted 200 years ago on the sliding paper doors. The images appear to shift position depending on the angle of viewing. These important cultural assets are a must-see. English guide available. (Reservations required.)
