Kamitani Jinja Shrine (Kamitani Tachinomiya)

This shrine is a Kyoto Prefecture-designated cultural property.
In one corner of Kamitani Jinja Shrine is a large “iwakura,” or sacred rock, where ancient people could measure the best season for agriculture based on the angle of the sunlight hitting the rock from Kabutoyama Mountain on the east. This is considered to be a ruin of an ancient religious festival of the sun, from when celestial bodies were worshipped as deities.
